BBC Proms 2008: Norrington is playing to the crowd

London: Prom 7 - It is a moot point to what extent a conductor's task on the podium is to give satisfaction to an audience. But there is surely a difference between giving pleasure to and indulging an audience, a distinction which was dangerously eroded by Roger Norrington in last night's Prom with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra.
