                      <title>Nielsen Symphony No. 4 - CBSO/Slobodeniouk, Symphony Hall, Birmingham</title>

<description>Celebrating Nielsen is a collaboration between The City of Birmingham Symphony and the Hallé who have joined forces this month to perform all six of the Danish composer's symphonies in both Birmingham and Manchester. The CBSO has opted for the even-numbered works, and opened the series with the best known of them, the Fourth Symphony, the Inextinguishable. The venture was devised by the orchestras' music directors, Sakari Oramo and Mark Elder. Oramo has since moved on, but was due to return to the CBSO to conduct his half of the cycle until he was forced to withdraw because of illness two weeks ago. Whether by accident or design, his replacements are both conductors with Finnish connections: Okko Kamu will conduct the second programme this weekend, while this opener was entrusted to Dmitri Slobodeniouk, Russian-born but now based in Finland.

                      <title>Beethoven Symphony No.9 Choral - Munich Philharmonic/Thielemann, Gasteig, Munich – New Years Concert </title>
                      <link>http://www.classicalmusichomepage.com/reviews/beethoven-symphony-no-9-choral-munich-philharmonic-thielemann-gasteig-munich-2013-new-years-concert</link>
<description>Beethoven, Symphony No.9 op.125 performed by Ricarda Merbeth (soprano), Mihoko Fujimura (mezzo), Jonas Kaufmann (tenor), Albert Dohmen (bass) and the Munich Philharmonic conducted by Christian Thielemann from the Philharmonie at the Gasteig, Munich – the New Years Concert. When the Munich Philharmonic raffled off tickets to their performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under Christian Thielemann in July of this year, only about two thirds of winners bothered to show up and make use of their free tickets. Half a year later, with the same program for the two New Years concerts and tickets selling at a premium, the Philharmonic Hall at the Gasteig was packed and scores of would-be attendees with “Ticket Sought” signs had to be sent back out into the dark night with their hopes of squeezing in unfulfilled. The lesson about the relation between price and worth is inescapable.
